...helping navigate cancer survivorship

Ryan Goyette

Ryan Goyette is a young adult cancer survivor.  She was just shy of her 25th birthday when she was diagnosed with advanced Stage III Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Cancer.  Between hospitalizations and general health set-backs, she endured six months of chemotherapy and two months of radiation.

Following her date of remission in October of 2007, she co-founded Young Adults Taking a Stand [Against Cancer] or better known as “YATS.”  YATS is a non-profit organization in the New Orleans metro area for cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers between the ages of 21-39 years old, and strives to navigate young adults toward the supportive resources that reflect the City’s unique local identity.  Since 2009, YATS has held an annual Anti-Cancer Party for the young adult cancer movement and has raised over $85,000 that has aided other non-profit organizations with the mission of helping young adults affected by cancer.

Ryan sat on the steering committee and was the fundraising committee leader for the Stupid Cancer’s 5th Annual OMG! Cancer Summit in 2012.  She was a First Connection Peer Volunteer and an Outreach Ambassador with the Leukemia Lymphoma Society from 2007 to 2010.  Ryan also spoke at the 2011 National Cancer Survivor’s Day in New Orleans.

Topics: Caregiver Support; Coping Techniques; Lymphedema; Sexuality and Intimacy; and Survivorship Experiences.
