Here at Triage Cancer®, we offer legal externship opportunities for law students eager to make a meaningful impact. Our legal externs play a vital role in advancing our mission of providing education and support to individuals diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers. As a legal extern, you will work on significant projects, conduct legal research, and gain practical experience in the field of cancer rights law.

Summer Legal Externship Opportunity

Triage Cancer® is now accepting applications for Summer 2024 externships. We will review applications on a rolling basis.

Law student externs will work under the supervision of Triage Cancer’s CEO and COO, who are both cancer rights attorneys, externs will support Triage Cancer’s delivery of cancer-related legal programs and services. Externs will have the opportunity to provide education on cancer-related legal issues, learn client interviewing skills, conduct legal and policy research, and write about a variety of cancer-related legal issues, such as insurance, employment, health care, disability, government benefits, estate planning, and consumer law. Students will also work one-on-one with Triage Cancer’s staff attorneys.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the Legal & Financial Navigation Program, research statutes, regulations, policies, legislation, and case law at the state and federal level
  • Synthesize complex legal concepts for lay audiences
  • Possible projects may include:
    • Completing intake interviews
    • Performing research on the various issues callers face, both for legal and practical steps an individual may take
    • Drafting correspondence with callers
    • Drafting content for educational materials and organization websites
    • Contributing to published works
    • Writing blogs and articles
    • Researching and creating content for educational presentations
    • Drafting policy white papers and journal articles

Requirements

Externships are unpaid, but can be awarded course credit from an academic institution. Ideal candidates should be enthusiastic about serving the cancer community, be organized, and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Candidates should be able to work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision, have experience with legal research and writing, and be proficient in all Microsoft Windows applications.

For those who are not seeking course credit, Triage Cancer® will also accept internship applications.
