11 Jun A New Way to Connect with the Social Security Administration: Video Appointments
The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently announced appointments can now be made by video call. In an effort to streamline appointments and accessibility, individuals can connect with the Social Security Administration from the comfort of their homes.
Why Meet with the Social Security Administration?
The SSA oversees retirement and disability benefits, and helps individuals enroll in Medicare.
Applications for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) can be submitted online on your own. But individuals who want guidance through the process, can schedule an appointment with the SSA. The SSA can help walk through the application process and answer any questions about eligibility for certain benefits.
For more information on disability insurance, see Triage Cancer’s resource page on Cancer & Disability Insurance.
Why are Video Calls Helpful?
For individuals with access to the internet and a smart device (tablet, phone, or computer), video call appointments can be helpful to save time and provide extra levels of safety and accessibility.
Individuals who are immunocompromised or who have mobility issues can now conduct their appointments from the safety and convenience of their own home without any added health risks. Video calls may also be a time and resource saver for those in more rural communities who may live far away from the nearest Social Security office.
What Can You Do During a Video Call Appointment?
Currently, video calls are available for administrative issues, including appointments to request a replacement Social Security card, or date of birth corrections. Video calls are also available for help with SSDI and SSI applications, redetermination appointments to review eligibility for benefits, overpayment of benefits, and to enroll in Medicare.
How to Schedule a Video Call Appointment?
To schedule a video appointment, contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or contact your local Social Security office. Representatives are available Monday through Friday from 8am to 7pm in all time zones. Offices tend to be the busiest on Mondays, the morning after a federal holiday, and the first week of the month, so those days may have longer wait times.
Video call appointments require access to a smart device compatible with Microsoft Teams which could be a laptop, tablet, or cell phone with a camera. Once a video call appointment is scheduled, you will receive an email with a link to join the video call at the scheduled time.
