ALS & ESRD have special rules: The standard 5-month SSDI waiting period is waived for ALS. ESRD Medicare eligibility runs on its own separate track tied to dialysis, not to your SSDI onset date. This calculator reflects both differences below.

Key dates in your disability benefits journey

Step 1 — Disability Onset
—
The date SSA determines your disability began, based on medical evidence, not necessarily the date you stopped working or applied.
Step 2 — Application Filed
—
The date you filed for SSDI. Note: retroactive pay can go back up to 12 months before your application date (minus the 5-month waiting period).
Step 3 — 5-Month Waiting Period Ends
—
SSA requires a mandatory 5-month wait from your onset date. No benefits are paid during this window, regardless of when you applied or were approved.
Step 4 — Entitlement Date (First Eligible Month)
—
This is the first month you are entitled to SSDI benefits. This is the 6th full month after your onset date.
Step 5 — Medicare Begins
—
Medicare Part A and B begin automatically after 24 months of SSDI entitlement. During the gap, it is important to maintain other health insurance coverage. To explore what options you might have access to, visit triagecancer.org/quick-guides/health-insurance-options.

Important disclaimer: This calculator is for educational purposes only and provides estimates based on standard SSA rules. It does not account for all individual circumstances, SSA processing delays, or changes in regulations.

A note on your onset date: this calculator uses the onset date you enter as if it is final. In practice, SSA may determine a different, often later, onset date than the one you allege, based on what the medical evidence in your file actually supports. If that happens, your waiting period, entitlement date, and back pay will shift to match SSA's determined date, not the one you entered here.

Always confirm your specific dates with the Social Security Administration at ssa.gov or by calling 1-800-772-1213. This tool is not legal or financial advice.
