First Descents: Embrace the Healing Power of Adventure

Our proud partner First Descents, provides free, life-changing outdoor adventures for young adults (ages 18-45) impacted by cancer and other serious health conditions.

First Descents (FD) knows that receiving a life-changing diagnosis can leave us with deep feelings of isolation, loneliness, and the need for a community of people who just “get it.”  FD’s programs are where adventure and community meet. Participants experience free outdoor adventure programs that empower them to climb, paddle, and surf beyond their diagnoses, reclaim their lives, and connect with others doing the same. “First Descents provided me with the foundations to break down some physical and emotional walls that cancer has been building in me. This experience was a catalyst, and just the kind of life change I needed. Thank you for a week I will never forget.” – First Descents Participant

For over 20 years First Descents has been a recognized leader in outdoor experiential programming. Through week-long programs, community adventures and healthcare partnerships, FD improves long-term survivorship and quality of life for young adults impacted by cancer and other serious health conditions.

First Descents’ adventure programs are free, adaptive, and no prior experience with adventure sports is necessary. All lodging, food, gear, and instruction are provided free of cost, and travel scholarships are available upon request. FD programs are challenge by choice, and expert guides and instructors will meet each participant where they’re at to ensure a safe, fun experience. Every program is staffed with professional chefs who make nutritious, delicious, health-supportive meals, and a team of staff and volunteers to make the week an unforgettable, stress-free adventure.

At the end of the day, FD is all about life-changing outdoor adventure and social connection. They will make adventure a part of your life through epic programs and by connecting you with a larger community of individuals who are Out Living It.

“While the doctors and medicine may have saved my life, First Descents taught me how to live again.” – FD participant
