Medicaid Work Requirements

This chart provides general information about Medicaid work requirements in each state, including who may be required to comply with them, what activities may count, how and when people may need to report their participation, possible exemptions, and short-term hardship exceptions. Medicaid work requirement policies are changing quickly as states review and implement new federal rules, so the information in this chart may change, and state requirements may differ from what is listed here. While state Medicaid agencies and other official state resources are generally the best sources of current information, some states may still be updating their policies, forms, and website content. Check official state resources for the latest information and contact your state Medicaid program with questions about specific situations.

For more information, visit our Medicaid Topics Page.

Please note: The chart displays 5 states at a time; use the navigation at the bottom to move between pages. It also contains multiple columns, so scroll left and right at the bottom of each page to see all available information.

StateWhich Medicaid programs do these requirements apply to?What activities can someone do to meet the requirements? How far back will Medicaid look to see if someone has completed the required activities? When do the requirements begin? When do people first need to report? How often does someone need to recertify?Who is not required to complete work requirements? Is someone required to complete work requirements if (1) they were in a hospital or nursing facility, (2) they or a dependent had to travel to receive serous medical care that wasn't available in their community, (3) they live in a county under a federal emergency, or (4) they live in a county with a high unemployment rate?Who is considered "medically frail?"How will Medicaid know that someone is "medically frail?" (Note: according to the June 1, 2026 regulations, all states can allow self-attestation for 2027, but in 2028, states will have to require proof of eligibility)
